Chow Chow is a southern relish of sorts. It’s great on a variety of vegetables like peas and greens, but it works well as a hotdog relish too. Sometimes it’s good enough to make a sandwich out of.

This is not a pickle for the faint of heart. Strong, salty and unbelievably crisp. This recipe comes from a friend of my mom’s who happened to be German. Whether this is a traditional “German” pickle or just a recipe she found somewhere, I don’t know.

Yummy to snack on and delicious in recipes calling for sweet salad cubes or sweet pickle relish.
4 quarts sliced cucumbers
6 medium sliced white onions
1/3 cup pickling salt
4 tablespoons pickling spices
5 cups sugar
3 cups cider vinegar
